The Truth Your Parents Didn’t Tell You About Chasing Dreams
We’ve all heard it at some point in our lives:
“You can be anything you want to be.”
For most of us, that message came from our parents. For others, it might’ve come from a teacher, mentor, or even a cartoon character 😅. Either way, it was meant to inspire us — and it did.
But here’s the truth your parents didn’t tell you:
Yes, you can be anything you want to be…
But you can’t be everything — at least not at the same time.
What J. Cole Had to Let Go
Take J. Cole for example. Bro had hoop dreams AND bars. He really thought he was gonna be in the NBA and be one of the best rappers alive. But eventually, he had to pick one.
And thank God he did. Because had he made it to the league, we might’ve never gotten 2014 Forest Hills Drive, The Off-Season, or any of the lyrical genius that makes him one of the greatest of our time 🎤.
LeBron Had a Choice Too
Even LeBron James — the King himself 👑 — had to choose. Coming out of high school, he was a beast on the football field AND the basketball court. Some said he could’ve been an NFL Hall of Famer. But he knew… it had to be one or the other.
We all know how that turned out.
It’s Not About Limitations — It’s About Focus
Your parents weren’t lying to you. What they really meant was:
Believe in yourself.
Know your worth.
And go after your dream with confidence.
I believe that too. 100%.
But what I don’t believe… is that you can do all things at once.
That’s not how greatness works.
Just Like Arnold Did It — One Chapter at a Time
Even Arnold Schwarzenegger (another one of my heroes) — bodybuilder, movie star, governor — didn’t become all of those things at once.
He focused on one thing at a time. First, he dominated bodybuilding. Then came Hollywood. Then came politics 💪🏾. He wasn’t juggling all three at once — he mastered one lane before entering the next.
And that’s my recommendation to you:
👉🏾 Pick your one thing. Go all in. Build your foundation.
Once you’ve conquered that, then — and only then — consider adding more to your plate.
So yes, hero — you can be anything you want to be.
Just don’t forget the secret: One thing at a time.
I’m out, hero. Peace.
